Other Things to Note

Where is Namibia?
Namibia is located in the South-Western part of Africa and shares a border with South Africa, Botswana, Angola, Zimbabwe, and Zambia. It has 2 deserts through it namely the Namib desert and the Kalahari Desert which it shares with Botswana to the East.

The Namibian People
The population of Namibia is made up of just 2.5 million people with a diverse demographic of cultures. Since 1990 the country adopted English as the national language, from Afrikaans. Languages endemic to Namibia include English, Afrikaans, OtjiHerero, Oshiwambo, Nama/Damara, Kwangali, Silozi, Portuguese and German. Notably, 20,000 people identify themselves as German speaking. This German heritage stems from the fact that between 1884 and 1915 Namibia was a German colony called Deutsch Südwestafrika.

About Namibia
The climate of Namibia is not as hot as one would think because its elevation inland is well above 1,000 meters above sea level and the coastal towns are even cooler due to the cold water Benguela stream which comes up straight from the South Pole to cool the Namibian coast. Nevertheless, summers inland are mostly felt hot by Europeans, but it is a dry heat for a few hours during the day. Nights even in the summer are pleasantly moderate in temperature. The rainy season in summer from December to March is like the best summer you would ever experience in central Europe with not much rain. Winters from May to July are cooler and very dry with rarely any clouds, temperatures will be around 25 Celsius during the maximal sunshine hours. Generally, Europeans can cope well with the Namibian climate. Tap water can be considered safe to drink in Namibia. However, when it comes to Windhoek and coastal towns; tap water, we would not recommend drinking it, mainly because of its unfavorable taste. Water given to you on lodges or farms which come from local boreholes can be considered safe. Generally, there is no unsafe drinking water in Namibia. Omaruru tap water is especially good, this comes from the same aquifer as Namibia wide sold Oasis natural mineral water (https://www.oasis-
water.com/). If you would like to purchase drinking water, it is most cost-efficient if you purchase 5 litre units as you find in every supermarket.
The Ministry
As you experience the natural beauty of Namibia and visit the various congregations, you should not miss out on the opportunity to join the brothers and sisters in their field service. You surely will enjoy this unforgettable experience even if you don’t speak the language as people are quite receptive to the bible unlike in most parts of the world. There is also a great need for bible teachers as remote parts of the country do not get a regular witness. If you speak a little English, it also helps that the English spoken in Namibia is quite basic and you will soon be able to communicate.

Game / Wildlife
On our properties such as Farm Schwarzenfels, Ombara Mountain Villa which is situated on Farm Schwarzenfels, Farm Jägerhof, and Farm Okajo Safari Lodge and to a lesser degree Farm Karibib due to its desert climate you can find the typical Namibian game such as Oryx, Kudu, Springbok, Warthog. On Farm Karibib and Okajo are Giraffes. Zebras, Ostriches and Damara Dik-Dik on Okajo and Schwarzenfels.

Cars / 4-wheel drives (called bakkies in Namibia) for transport
Renting cars and 4-wheel drives in Namibia is quite more expensive than in most other countries due to the many gravel roads and far distances holidaymakers will travel. For tourists who stay a few months, it may be advisable to purchase a car or 4-wheel drive and sell it later before leaving the country. You can also leave your vehicle on one of our properties if you intend to come again at a later stage. It is not rare that Witnesses who help where the need is greater keep their own car in Namibia.
