The Neighborhood
GEORGE- gateway to the Garden Route
Here are just some of the local attractions within a 1hr drive from George. Knysna with its Elephant sanctuary; Mossel Bay with its historic lighthouse and Oudtshoorn with it Cango Caves and ostriches, Monkeyland primate sanctuary and Birds of Eden the largest free-flight bird aviary in the world
The Outeniqua mountains are part of the scenic beauty of the Garden Route. Mostly roads are tarred, but some with rustic gravel roads, like the Montagu Pass, built in 1848 - the oldest pass still in use in South Africa. Also loved by 4x4s and mountain bikers alike is the Swartberg Pass, one of the most breath-taking passes in Africa. .
Whale watching: Each year Southern Right whales migrate into the coastal waters to calve and nurse their young. On the Garden Route whale viewing can be done from Still Bay to Plettenberg Bay. In the village of Wilderness (20min from George) whales often come in close to suckle their calves. In Knysna and in Plettenberg Bay visitors can enjoy close encounters with these gigantic animals by boat.
For the strong at heart shark-cage diving with the White Sharks off Mossel Bay is available.
GOLFING: The Garden Route is known as the golfing mecca of South Africa. With no less than 12 golf courses, all within an hour drive from Wilderness, one is spoilt for choice.
George lies within a region of exceptional beauty. A land of imposing mountain ranges, shimmering lakes and a rugged coast line alternated by golden beaches. This is the setting of the largest complex of indigenous forest in Southern Africa. As the climate became drier the frosts receded, leaving enclaves such as the southern Cape forests in the most sheltered and well-watered areas. There is probably no better way to experience these forests than on a mountain bike. Some of the most exciting cycle routes are situated in the forests and the routes can cater for every need, from family fun to testing the most experienced riders.
